River Cruise Planning

See the World Differently by River

River cruising puts travelers closer to the places they came to see. Ships dock near historic towns and cities, scenery unfolds continuously outside the windows, and the journey often becomes as important as the destination. Our experience spans European rivers, the Mekong in Southeast Asia, multiple river cruise lines and an expanding range of river destinations around the world.

A Different Kind of Cruise

River Cruising Is About the Destination

Ocean cruising often uses the ship as a destination in its own right. River cruising turns that relationship around. The ship becomes a comfortable way to move through a region while towns, landscapes, history, food and culture remain at the center of the vacation. That difference affects everything from ship size and entertainment to excursions, dining and the pace of each day.

Same Word, Very Different Vacation

River Cruise Versus Ocean Cruise

River Cruising

Smaller ships, fewer passengers, frequent port calls, destination-focused excursions and scenery visible almost continuously from the ship create an intimate style of travel. Evenings tend to be quieter because the destination, rather than elaborate onboard entertainment, is the focus.

Ocean Cruising

Ocean ships generally offer more restaurants, entertainment, pools, activities and cabin choices. They can cover greater distances and reach destinations river ships cannot, but ports may require more transportation before travelers reach the places they came to see.

Experience Should Be Described Accurately

Firsthand, Planning and Upcoming Experience

We do not treat every destination we sell as if we have personally sailed it. Our river expertise comes from a combination of firsthand travel, extensive client planning and future journeys already on our calendar.

Firsthand Experience

Europe and the Mekong

We have personally cruised rivers in France, Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria, Hungary and other parts of Europe, along with the Mekong through Vietnam and Cambodia.

Planning and Booking Experience

Nile and Magdalena

We have researched and planned Nile river programs with AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways and Viking, as well as AmaWaterways' Magdalena River cruises in Colombia. That is client-planning expertise rather than a claim that we have personally sailed those rivers.

Upcoming Firsthand Experience

U.S. Rivers and Celebrity River

Our upcoming travels include the Columbia and Snake Rivers with American Cruise Lines in 2027 and the Rhine aboard Celebrity River Cruises in 2028.

Rivers We Know Firsthand

European River Cruising and the Mekong

Different rivers create very different vacations. Wine, history, scenery, seasonal events and the surrounding culture all influence which journey may fit a traveler best.

Rhine

Castles, historic towns, major cities and beautiful river scenery make the Rhine one of Europe's most popular and accessible first river cruises.

Danube

The Danube connects major Central European cities with smaller towns, vineyards and layers of imperial and modern European history.

Burgundy and Rhone

Southern France combines wine, food, Roman history, Provence and distinctive French towns in a journey that can feel very different from the Rhine or Danube.

Moselle

Steep vineyards, castles, small towns and Riesling country create one of Europe's most scenic and intimate river experiences.

Douro

Portugal's terraced vineyards, Port wine heritage and dramatic valleys make the Douro one of the most visually distinctive European river journeys.

Bordeaux

Several waterways combine to create a wine-focused journey through chateaux, historic towns and both Left Bank and Right Bank Bordeaux wine country.

Mekong

Cruising through Vietnam and Cambodia places travelers close to villages, markets, temples, local communities and a way of life that is fundamentally different from European river cruising.

River Cruise Lines Are Not Interchangeable

Choosing the Right River Cruise Company

Ships may look similar from the riverbank, but cabin design, dining, excursion philosophy, inclusions, activity choices and overall style can vary considerably.

Avalon Waterways

Known for Panorama Suites with beds facing the windows, flexible excursion choices and a contemporary approach to European river cruising. We have extensive firsthand Avalon experience.

AmaWaterways

Offers river cruising in Europe and more distant regions, with active excursion choices, cycling opportunities on many itineraries and a broad range of river destinations. We have sailed AmaWaterways firsthand.

CroisiEurope

A European operator with a broad network of river itineraries. Our firsthand river history began with CroisiEurope in Bordeaux in 2017.

Viking River Cruises

One of the largest names in river cruising, offering an extensive European network as well as selected international river programs. We regularly compare Viking for clients.

American Cruise Lines

Small-ship U.S. river cruising creates a different domestic experience built around American scenery, history and regional destinations. We will experience the Columbia and Snake Rivers firsthand in 2027.

Celebrity River Cruises

Celebrity is bringing its premium approach to European river cruising beginning in 2027. We are scheduled to experience Celebrity River Cruises firsthand on the Rhine in 2028.

Details That Can Change the Trip

What We Compare Before Recommending a River Cruise

1

Itinerary

Rivers, cities, overnight stays and excursion schedules matter more than simply choosing the cruise line with the most recognizable name.

2

Cabin Design

French balconies, panorama windows, step-out balconies, fixed windows and true suites can create very different cabin experiences.

3

Excursions

Included tours, active options, cycling, optional excursions and group size vary significantly among river cruise lines.

4

Dining and Beverages

Meal flexibility, regional cuisine, wine and beverage inclusions differ enough to affect both the experience and total vacation cost.

5

Mobility

Cobblestones, gangways, stairs, rafting between ships and walking tours can make river cruising more physically demanding than the small size of the ship might suggest.

6

Pre and Post Travel

Hotel stays and land extensions can add important destinations while also affecting pace, transportation and the overall length of the trip.

A Reality Unique to River Travel

What Happens When River Levels Are Too High or Too Low?

River cruises operate on working waterways, and unusual water levels can affect navigation. Low water may make a section too shallow, while high water can prevent a ship from passing beneath bridges or through certain areas.

Cruise lines may respond by changing docking locations, modifying excursions, transferring travelers by coach, swapping ships on opposite sides of an affected section or, in more significant cases, altering part of the itinerary. The exact response depends on the river, ship, cruise line and conditions at that moment.

What Travelers Should Know

  • River levels can change quickly
  • No cruise line controls the weather
  • Different ships may have different operating limits
  • Itinerary flexibility is sometimes necessary
  • Travel insurance remains an important consideration
Some River Cruises Have an Extra Reason to Go

Wine Cruises and Christmas Markets

Wine River Cruises

Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Rhone, Moselle and Douro are natural destinations for wine-focused river travel. Winery visits, tastings and food experiences can become an important part of the itinerary.

Christmas Markets River Cruises

Europe changes completely during the holiday season. Christmas markets, decorated medieval towns, seasonal foods and winter traditions can turn familiar Rhine and Danube destinations into a very different river cruise experience. We have sailed Christmas Markets cruises firsthand and will return with clients in 2027.

The Right River Cruise Is About Fit

Do Not Choose a River Cruise Only by the River

Two ships traveling the same stretch of the Rhine can provide very different vacations. Cabin layout, excursions, dining, activity level, inclusions, passenger mix and pre-cruise or post-cruise options all matter. We compare the complete trip, not simply the waterway printed on the brochure.

Common River Cruise Questions

Before You Choose a River Cruise

Is a river cruise good for a first-time cruiser?

It can be, particularly for travelers who care more about destinations, history and sightseeing than large-ship entertainment. It is also very different from an ocean cruise, so expectations should be set accordingly.

Which European river is best for a first river cruise?

The Rhine and Danube are both popular first choices because they combine major cities, smaller towns, history and scenery. Bordeaux, the Douro, Moselle and southern France may be better for travelers with more specific interests such as wine or regional cuisine.

Are river cruises all-inclusive?

Inclusions vary by cruise line. Excursions, beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi, airport transfers and specialty activities may be included differently, so comparing the total package is more meaningful than comparing cruise fares alone.

Do river cruise ships have balconies?

Some do, but the term balcony can mean different things. Depending on the ship, accommodations may feature a true step-out balcony, French balcony, panoramic opening window or fixed river-view window.

Are river cruises good for travelers with mobility limitations?

It depends on the traveler and itinerary. The ships are smaller, but destinations may involve cobblestones, stairs, steep gangways, extensive walking and sometimes crossing through another rafted river ship. Mobility should be discussed before booking.

What does rafting mean on a river cruise?

River ships sometimes dock alongside one another because pier space is limited. Guests on the outer ship may need to walk through or across another vessel to reach shore. This is normal river-cruise operation in many European ports.

Can low water ruin a river cruise?

Unusual water levels can affect navigation, but cruise lines have several ways to adapt. The outcome depends on the river, severity and duration of conditions and the cruise line's operating plan.

Is the Mekong similar to a European river cruise?

Not really. The basic small-ship concept is familiar, but the destinations, infrastructure, shore experiences, culture and daily rhythm are completely different. A Mekong cruise is much more about Southeast Asia than replicating a European river product.

Have you personally cruised the Nile or Magdalena River?

Not yet. Our experience with those destinations comes from researching, comparing and booking river programs for clients. We distinguish that planning expertise from the rivers we have personally sailed.
